Why it matters

A 'medium' regular and a 'medium' petite are very different physical fits. Channels filter on size_type so customers shopping petite see petite items. Missing size_type means missing petite/plus filtering opportunities.

Size_type adds the body-type dimension to sizing — petite (shorter), plus (larger), tall (longer), maternity, big-and-tall. A medium petite isn't the same physical fit as a medium regular; same numeric size, different cut for different bodies. Items targeting petite or plus customers need explicit size_type to win the filtered searches those customers run.

The dimension matters more for some categories than others. Apparel verticals where body type is a primary purchase criterion (women's professional wear, athleisure, lingerie) benefit heavily from size_type. Verticals where one-cut-fits-most works (oversized streetwear, certain accessories) need it less. Use the field where customers actively filter on body type; skip it where they don't.

The hierarchy: size + size_type + size_system together describe the variant fully. UK 12 petite is unambiguous; UK 12 alone is multi-interpretation. For catalogs serving multiple body types, populating all three becomes essential for variant disambiguation under item_group_id.

FAQ

Is size_type the same as size?

No. Size is the numeric/letter value ('M', 'UK 12'). Size_type is the body type cut ('petite', 'plus'). A garment can be 'M petite' — both fields set.
