google_product_category categorisation Fix “Missing value [google_product_category]” on Google Merchant Center
Google's product taxonomy field isn't populated. Items still serve in most cases (Google infers category from title) but with reduced segmentation precision and missing eligibility for category-specific filters.
What you see in Google Merchant Center:
Missing value [google_product_category]
API identifier: missing_required_attribute
Missing GPC is a warning rather than blocking for most categories — items still serve but with reduced segmentation precision and missing eligibility for category-specific filters. For the categories where GPC is strictly required (apparel, software, weapons, media), missing GPC is blocking.
The strategic implication: even where it's optional, GPC drives meaningful ad-delivery quality. Items without GPC compete against a broader, less-matched competitive set; items with GPC at the deepest applicable node compete against the right peer set.
The taxonomy file Google publishes contains roughly 6,000 nodes. Mapping a catalog requires either manual classification, automated classification (which the Optimiser does), or hybrid where automated covers easy items and manual handles ambiguous ones.
The numeric-ID preference matters here too — IDs persist across taxonomy revisions, paths don't. Feeds using paths break when Google renames nodes; feeds using IDs keep working.
Top causes
- 1
Feed-generation pipeline doesn't fill google_product_category
- 2
Field populated with internal taxonomy instead of Google's published taxonomy
- 3
Required for select categories (apparel, software, media) but treated as optional everywhere
How to fix it
- 1
Map each product to a Google taxonomy node
Use Google's official taxonomy file (link in feed-fields/google-product-category). Pick the deepest applicable node.
- 2
Populate the field
Either with the numeric ID (preferred — stable across taxonomy updates) or full path string. One value per item.
- 3
Re-export and refresh
Force-fetch the feed.

FAQ
Is it actually blocking, or just a warning?
Warning for most categories; blocking for apparel, software, weapons, and a handful of restricted categories. Even when only a warning, missing GPC suppresses ad delivery quality measurably.
