identifier_exists identifier Fix “Missing identifier_exists for GTIN-exempt item” on Google Merchant Center
Item has no GTIN and no MPN, but identifier_exists isn't set to false. Google requires the explicit flag — otherwise it assumes a missing GTIN is an error rather than an intentional exemption.
What you see in Google Merchant Center:
Missing identifier_exists for GTIN-exempt item
API identifier: missing_identifier_exists
Items without GTIN, MPN, and brand all populated need identifier_exists: false to declare the absence explicitly. Without the flag, channels assume missing GTIN is data quality issue rather than legitimate exemption.
The legitimate use cases are narrow — genuinely custom-made, vintage, art, antiques, own-brand without manufacturer identifier. For everything else, the GTIN exists somewhere; you need to find it rather than declaring exemption.
The misuse pattern that triggers account-quality review: bulk-setting identifier_exists: false on branded retail products to bypass GTIN requirements. Channels audit identifier_exists usage; the flag is monitored.
Top causes
- 1
Custom-made or vintage products without identifiers and the flag not set
- 2
Own-brand products where the feed pipeline treats missing GTIN as 'fill later'
- 3
Brand new product lines where GTIN hasn't been assigned but listing went live
How to fix it
- 1
Identify items with no GTIN/MPN/brand
Genuinely identifier-exempt items: custom-made, vintage, art, antiques, own-brand without GTIN.
- 2
Set identifier_exists: false on those items
Don't bulk-set everything to false — that's misuse. Only set on items that genuinely have no manufacturer identifier.
- 3
For everything else, source the GTIN
Most retail products do have GTINs. Don't take the shortcut of identifier_exists: false unless it's genuinely true.

Missing GTIN
Google Merchant Center reports this when a product is missing its GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) — the manufacturer-assigned barcode that uniquely identifies retail products. Affected items stop showing in Shopping ads, free listings, and Performance Max retail campaigns.
Read moreMissing MPN
Google requires MPN alongside brand when GTIN isn't available. Without either, the item can't be uniquely identified against the global product graph and gets rejected from Shopping placements.

FAQ
Will identifier_exists: false get my products approved?
Yes for items that genuinely have no identifier. No if you use it to bypass GTIN requirements on items that should have them — Google's auditing catches misuse.
