Christmas delivery cut-off dates in catalogue ads

How to show 'order by' Christmas delivery dates in Meta catalogue ads, switch the message when the cut-off passes, and stop advertising products that won't arrive.

In the first half of December, the question in every gift buyer’s head isn’t “how much?” but “will it get here in time?”. An ad that answers it has an edge. An ad that keeps implying Christmas delivery after the last order date does the opposite: it brings in orders that turn into complaints.

Catalogue ads make this harder than it sounds. They show whichever product Meta picks, so the message has to be right for every product, and it has to change on a specific day without you rebuilding the ads in the busiest weeks of the year.

Step 1: work out your real cut-off dates

Start from your carriers. Royal Mail publishes its last recommended posting dates for Christmas each year, and couriers publish their own. Then work backwards:

  • Add your own handling time. If you need a day to pick and pack, your last order date is a day before the carrier’s last posting date.
  • Check each delivery option. Standard, express and next-day usually have different dates.
  • Check product exceptions. Made-to-order items, personalised products, oversized deliveries and anything shipped from a supplier often have earlier cut-offs.
  • Check other countries. International dates are usually earlier, sometimes by weeks.

Write the result down as a short table: delivery option, last order date, products affected. Everything else follows from it.

Step 2: put the message in the feed

Meta’s catalogue has five custom labels, custom_label_0 to custom_label_4, each up to 100 characters. Meta’s field reference describes them as text you can add to your ad creative, such as the headline. That makes them a good home for a delivery message.

Pick one label for Christmas delivery and give each product one of a few values:

ValueMeaning
xmas-standardArrives by Christmas with standard delivery if ordered by the standard date
xmas-expressStandard date passed, express still arrives in time
xmas-missedWon’t arrive by Christmas
(empty)No Christmas message

Products with earlier cut-offs move between values on earlier dates. When a date passes, you change the label in the feed, and everything that reads it follows.

If you’d rather show the message as text directly, put the words in the label instead of a code, for example “Order by 18 Dec for Christmas delivery”, and use the label in the ad’s headline. The trade-off is that the wording then lives in your feed, so changing it means changing the feed.

Step 3: use the label in product sets

Product sets can filter on custom labels. Two sets are especially useful in December:

  • Arrives in time: everything except xmas-missed. Use it for gift-focused campaigns.
  • Won’t arrive in time: only xmas-missed. Pause or move it, or advertise it with a message that doesn’t promise Christmas delivery.

Changing which products are in a set doesn’t mean editing the ad set, which helps avoid restarting the learning phase at the worst moment.

Step 4: show the message on the creative

If your catalogue images are designed from a template, the delivery message can be part of the design, drawn on only for the right products.

In our DPA Creative Editor, any layer can be set to show only when a condition is true, and custom labels are among the fields a condition can check. A design for December might have:

  • A ribbon reading “Order by 18 Dec for Christmas delivery”, shown only when the label equals xmas-standard.
  • A second ribbon reading “Express delivery still arrives for Christmas”, shown only when the label equals xmas-express.
  • Nothing extra for xmas-missed or an empty label.

The dates in this example are illustrative. Use your own from step 1. The text in each ribbon is typed into the design once. The label decides which one each product gets. When you change the labels in the feed, the affected product images are rendered again.

Step 5: plan the switch days

Put each cut-off date in the calendar with a named owner. On the day:

  1. Update the labels in the feed for the products affected.
  2. Make sure the catalogue refreshes soon after. Schedule an extra update if you need to.
  3. Spot-check a few products in the catalogue and in ad previews.
  4. Check that gift-focused campaigns are now showing only products that will arrive in time.

The first switch is the one that catches people out, because it often falls in a normal working week while the sale is still running.

After the last cut-off

Once nothing will arrive in time, catalogue ads still have jobs to do:

  • Gift cards and digital products can be delivered instantly. If you sell them, give them their own message.
  • Click and collect or local delivery, if you offer them, often run later than postal dates.
  • January sales start soon after. Our Black Friday 2026 plan covers the same principles of planning creative changes before the busy period starts.

Frequently asked questions

Should I show a Christmas delivery date in my ads?

If you can deliver by Christmas, saying so answers the question most gift buyers have in December. Only state a date you can meet for every product the ad might show, and change the message as soon as it passes.

How do I change the message after the Christmas cut-off?

Put the message, or a code for it, in a custom label in your catalogue. Ads and designs that read the label change when the label changes, without editing the ads themselves.

Where do I find this year's Christmas posting dates?

From your carriers. Royal Mail publishes its last recommended posting dates each year, and couriers publish their own. Build in your own picking and packing time on top.
